Project to improve overall efficiency of Pakistani Customs Agencies
TORONTO, Ontario, February 15, 2005 - Xenos Group Inc. (TSX: XNS), the data to e-content company™, today announced that Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), Pakistan's leading container handling facility, has selected GoXML software to integrate electronic transaction processing for improved logistics in the country’s ports. GoXML will increase communications efficiencies with a single, open-standards based platform across multiple organizations for faster import and export processes. iBridge Capital Group, Xenos’ distributor partner in Asia, specializing in enterprise information management, led the project discussion and worked closely with the KICT team to meet their requirements.
KICT is the first pilot site for the Customs Administration Reform (CARE) Project, an in-house initiative of Pakistan Customs and Central Board of Revenue. With the support of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, it will improve efficiencies and reduce clearance times for commercial goods coming into and leaving Pakistani ports. Currently, KICT uses a mix of non-standard EDI messaging and various international standard EDIFACT data formats. These incompatible data formats make communication between KICT and multiple shipping lines, business partners and government agencies a time-consuming procedure.
Both the IMF and the World Bank recognize the value of technology in streamlining excise practices. The implementation of Xenos GoXML satisfies CARE requirements for the use of standard XML data formats, leading to business process re-engineering within KICT.
Scalable, cost effective solutions for faster shipping
“To implement CARE within our timelines, we looked for a solution that is easy to use and manage,” said Anwer Umed Ali, Chief Technology Officer, KICT. “Xenos GoXML meets our criteria for a solution need that is scalable, cost effective and time efficient to satisfy our service level commitments.”
The GoXML system will be triggered on a planned, scheduled or event basis, such as time-of-day, berthing of a vessel, ETA of a vessel, or entry of a particular container in the yard. Once triggered, it will translate existing KICT EDI messages to the CARE XML formats.
“We are excited to have KICT as a Xenos customer and look forward to helping them reach their business objectives,” said Bill Kurtz, Vice President of Sales at Xenos. “Xenos GoXML solutions are used in ports worldwide to accommodate the increased volume of goods being transported by sea and to improve the efficiencies in the movement of information.”
“In an information age, enterprises face many challenges that demand the right information to be delivered to the right people (internal and external) at the right time in the right format. We are fully committed to bringing the best of breed technologies to fast growing Asian enterprises in order to meet their information management challenges”, said Tony Chew, Chairman and CEO of iBridge Capital Group.
Implementation is set to get underway in March 2005. Because the implementation will leverage existing KICT applications, GoXML will “go-live” within production deadlines.
KICT is Pakistan's leading container-handling facility. It is located at the port of Karachi, a natural deep-water harbor on the Pakistan coast of the Arabian Sea. KICT has been in operation since 1998.
More than 80 percent of Pakistan's International trade passes through Karachi, with a growing proportion carried in containers. KICT has three berths (28, 29, & 30) with a cumulative berth length of over 600 meters, and draught of up to 11 meters. Two large size vessels can be handled together at any one time.
KICT is a member of the Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) Group, the world's leading port investor, developer and operator with interests in 18 countries throughout Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Today HPH operates a total 214 berths in 36 ports together with a number of transport related service companies.
